The traditional kaftan or long sleeved robe is an ankle-length garment with long, flowing sleeves. The loose-fitting garment was originally a long, button-down robe worn mainly by men in the Middle East. A long gown used to be made of silk or cotton, usually with a belt or sash around the waist and sleeves up to the elbow. Istanbul's Topkapi Palace has an amazing collection of kaftans, which are made of rich, luxurious fabrics.
At that time, wearing a kaftan was considered the prerogative of Ottoman sultans and people of higher social status. It was considered a very valuable piece of clothing and was given to important Ottoman officials on major religious occasions or by generals who had won victories in battle.
But over time, things changed, and by the 19th century, the robe had changed from a luxury item of clothing to something only poor people could wear, and only shop owners could wear!
That said, robes have found a return to the fashion scene in recent years (though we can't say they ever went out of fashion) and are becoming increasingly popular, pleasing the taste of two women who want elegant and stylish formal dresses and those involved in a more casual look; But I don't want to look like a tomboy.
Kaftans are loose-fitting, free-flowing, vibrant and yet, always flattering. While most women tend to think of kaftans as the perfect beachwear (because it is), kaftans are perfect for all seasons. You can wear them over a pair of leggings for the chilly atmosphere outside.
And obviously, you could wear a colourful kaftan, add some accessories and flaunt it in the summers. Hence, a perfect choice for a staycation anytime, anywhere.
